So I really wanted to read the book “Skinny Bitch” by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. The title entices me. I still may….. but I am sure it would turn me into a card carrying vegetarian, which isn’t a bad thing, seeing as how I was for 8 years throughout high school and college. But, I have to say that I am NOT a fan of rules and being a vegetarian means that you have to follow some pretty strict rules. And I could NEVER EVER DREAM of giving up SUSHI! So don’t ask me to!!! Now that I have gotten that out of my system, I would like to tell you why I am OBSESSED with the Mediterranean Diet. A few months ago I was looking for a good healthy “lifestyle” diet choice that was right for me. My Mother (aka the wisest woman in the world) had been mentioning, over and over again, this Mediterranean Diet that she thought was so amazing and perfect. She explained to me that the people that lived bordering the Mediterranean Sea lived a remarkably healthy life, and that in that region, heart disease and cancer were almost non-existent. She told me that this was the lifestyle diet that I was looking for. And as usual, she was right.
This is a diet rich in plant foods. Loads of whole grains, colorful fruits and vegetables and hearty beans, legumes and nuts make up the bulk of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid (as seen above). Olive oil, cheese and yogurt follow closely. According to the Mediterranean Diet, Fish should be enjoyed weekly but more often than poultry and eggs. And red meat should be eaten ONLY on special occasions, if at all. I like that. I rarely eat meat, anyway, so this diet works quite well for me.
As you can see, regular physical activity is the largest part of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. For obvious reasons. Work out, people! It is the closest thing that we have to the Fountain of Youth!!! Enough said!
Wine… my favorite part of the Pyramid. But only in moderation! One glass daily for women and 2 for men.
The book pictured above entitled “The Mediterranean Diet” by Marissa Cloutier MS., RD., and Eve Adamson is a great guide to living the Mediterranean way in modern America. It describes the history of The Mediterranean Diet, gives you great tips on what foods to enjoy, what to avoid and just really eases you into living this wonderful, healthy lifestyle. There are some amazing recipes, as well. Visit your local bookstore or click here to order your copy.
This diet may not be for everyone, but it is definitely for me! That is why I am OBSESSED with the Mediterranean Diet!
